I talked to three people who rely on dictation daily. Here's what they taught me about accessibility.

1. Permission friction is a barrier. Dictation tools need microphone, speech recognition, and accessibility permissions. For users who rely on accessibility features, this permission flow needs to be smooth. Every extra step is a barrier.

2. Error recovery must be fast. When you dictate full-time, errors are constant. The correction workflow needs to be fast and keyboard-accessible. If you have to switch to a mouse to fix an error, the workflow breaks.

3. Custom vocabulary is essential. Full-time users develop extensive custom vocabularies. The tool needs to support hundreds of protected terms and make them easy to add.

4. Reliability is non-negotiable. If the tool fails, the user can't write. Full-time dictation users need tools that work consistently, every time.

Temporary injuries are more common than you'd think. Broken wrists, shoulder surgery, carpal tunnel flare-ups , they all make typing impossible for weeks or months.
