What 'Lifetime' Means for a Mac App, and What It Does Not

What 'Lifetime' Means for a Mac App, and What It Does Not

"Lifetime license" gets thrown around a lot. I want to tell you exactly what it means for Echo Flow , and what it doesn't.

I've been on both sides of this. I've bought "lifetime" deals that turned out to be marketing fluff. And I've built a lifetime license I actually stand behind. The difference is honesty about the edges.

The honest definition

When you buy Echo Flow, you get the 1.x line. Every update from 1.0 to 1.9 to 1.99 , all included, forever. That's the lifetime part.

What "lifetime" does not mean: every future version ever made. If a 2.0 comes along, that's a new major version. It may cost existing users a discounted upgrade fee. I don't know yet , we're still on 1.x.

Here's what I can promise: your copy keeps working. Forever. If I disappear tomorrow, you still have a fully functional dictation tool. It doesn't phone home to check your license. It doesn't expire.

"Lifetime" marketing
Vague and risky
  • May mean "lifetime of the company"
  • May exclude major versions
  • May require a subscription later
  • Unclear what you're buying
Echo Flow lifetime
Specific and bounded
  • 1.x line, all updates included
  • Works even if I disappear
  • No license server, no expiry
  • 2.x may cost extra

The three things "lifetime" claims hide

I've bought three "lifetime" apps. Here's what I learned:

1. "Lifetime" often means "lifetime of the company." If the company shuts down, your license dies with it. This happened to me with a writing tool I loved. Company closed, app stopped working six months later.

2. Major versions are usually excluded. A "lifetime" license for 1.0 might not include 2.0. That's technically honest but feels like a bait-and-switch when 2.0 is the version everyone wants.

3. "Lifetime" can mean "we'll support this for two years." Some companies define lifetime as their support window, not your use window. Read the fine print.

How I built Echo Flow's lifetime license

I decided upfront: I'd be specific about what's included and honest about what's not.

Included: Every 1.x update. Bug fixes, new features, new rewrite actions, new snippet capabilities , all of it, free, forever.

Not included (probably): A future 2.0 major version. If we get there, existing users will get a discount. That's the fair way to do it.

The guarantee: Your copy keeps working. No license server. No expiry. No "phone home" check. If I disappear, Echo Flow doesn't stop.

I've seen too many "lifetime" deals that were really just "we'll support this until we don't." I wanted to build something I'd actually buy myself.

The honest note

A lifetime license is only as good as the company behind it. If you're evaluating any "lifetime" deal, ask three questions: What version line is included? What happens if the company shuts down? Does the app phone home to verify the license? If the answers are vague, the deal is vague.

The questions to ask any "lifetime" deal

Before you buy any lifetime license, ask:

  1. What version line is included? 1.x only, or all future versions?
  2. What happens if the company shuts down? Does the app keep working?
  3. Does it phone home? Is there a license server that could deactivate you?
  4. What's the refund policy? If they abandon it in six months, can you get your money back?

I ask these now because I didn't ask them before. I bought a "lifetime" deal for a design tool. Company pivoted, app got abandoned, no refund. That was $89 I'll never get back.

Echo Flow 1.x , all updates included, forever
No license server , works offline, no phone home
Works if I disappear , no kill switch, no expiry
2.x not guaranteed , may cost extra, but 1.x keeps working

The bottom line

"Lifetime" is a word that's been abused by marketing. I'm trying to use it honestly.

Echo Flow's lifetime means: buy it once, use the 1.x line forever, and your copy keeps working no matter what happens to me or the company. That's the promise.

If you're evaluating any lifetime deal, ask the hard questions. I wish I had.
